Is it challenging to move between two different languages and cultures as you develop your music?
Enrico: Yes, it really is. Also because for us, being so far from the smooth jazz natural market, it means being constantly updated and aware of what the market itself is offering. Besides, it’s exciting to see what we have to say in terms of composing our music, trying to maintain our identity and our roots, conjugating all this with the smooth jazz style. About the language, I have many friends around the US I keep in touch with almost weekly and... well, I keep reading and listening to English everyday!
Cristian: Yes, but all comes naturally. The music we write is mostly the music we would like to listen to. And since we love to listen to many different styles, our music is a blend of all this stuff. Also, the fact we are not from America allows us explore the smooth jazz without being too conditional.
What are your music plans for the future? Are you in the studio now?
Enrico: At the moment, we are writing some new material, and I have to say it’s pretty good, actually! Personally, I’m working on booking gigs for a Fall Tour, which is gonna happen hopefully between November and December around Italy and North Europe. In a longer perspective, I hope to keep on playing our music ever more.
Cristian: Our creative vein is always at work, so our plans are writing new material and playing it. We already have enough songs for an entire new album and we’re planning to go in the studio late 2007.
What is your song writing process? Is it collaborative, or does each person have a specific role?
Enrico: Each person has a specific role, especially due to the fact that we don’t live in the same city. I live about 1 hour driving from where Cristian lives. So, it's been natural for us to set up different roles in our song producing process. Mainly, Cristian comes up with the original ideas and begins the arrangements. Then, we meet, I do the rhythm programming and we finish the arrangements and pre-production together.
Cristian: Usually, I come up with the original idea. There is not a scheme or a ritual: it can happen while I’m driving or listening to the radio, or whatever. And I start playing the new stuff sometimes on the guitar, sometimes on the keyboards and that’s the fun thing: it’s always different. Then we meet and share our thoughts, ideas and taste.
Can you name a place you would love to perform in, but haven’t yet had the chance?
Enrico: Well, there would be more than just one… but the first place that comes to my mind is the Hollywood Bowl. Am I too ambitious?
Cristian: Being Italian I would say La Scala in Milan… but since they don’t have jazz concerts in there I’d say the Carnegie Hall. Or the Budokan in Japan. As you can see, I like to travel.
How do you describe your music?
Enrico: I like to think of our music as a smooth jazz journey through different places and landscapes. Someone said it’s perfect for a wine tour.
Cristian: Simply a blend of what we like to listen to and to play: from jazz to country, in a smooth jazz version.
Finish this sentence: I can’t go a day without…?
Enrico: Internet. And candy bars!
Cristian: thinking about music.
