What is the most challenging aspect of recording a new album?
I found recording "Bridge of Art" to be more fun and exciting than a challenge. Probably the biggest challenge was deciding what order to put the tunes on the CD.
In what direction would you like to see Smooth Jazz head in the next five years and what advice would you give an artist who is trying to break into the Music business?
I would love to see Smooth Jazz put more emphasis on improvisation and instrumental jazz performances. I also think most of the new Smooth Jazz is groove oriented which is really cool, but I think the idea of jazz that swings is sort of getting lost in the shuffle. I think that we should all be open to listening to more new stuff. I think the most important thing a new artist can do is just stay really true to what they love and what sounds good to them. I think too many musicians feel like they need to follow some sort of formula. The beauty of jazz is
that it can sort of go anywhere, and that's where you should let it take you.
Aside from music, are there any other artistic fields (like painting) that you create within?
You know, that's funny, because I would really love to get into painting or woodworking. I'm so busy right now with music, that I really am not able to stretch out into other art forms just yet. I love art as you know, and the new CD "Bridge of Art" was inspired by children's' artwork. I try to put my artistic senses into everything I do and hope to someday work with visual arts like painting and drawing. I'm a huge fan of Miles Davis' and Joni Mitchell's paintings. Maybe someday you'll see some David Boswell paintings hanging in some gallery somewhere... that would be cool.
Have you discovered a favorite new artist or CD release that we should know about?
I really dig Mike Stern's new CD. I think Mike is a really amazing player and a wonderful composer as well. I also really love the new Metheny-Mehldau CD. Pat never ceases to amaze me.
Here's a tough one: if you were about to go on tour and could only bring one guitar, what style would you choose?
That's actually an easy one for me. The main guitar I play is a Gibson L4. I love it because it's a fat jazz guitar that has these beautiful acoustic
qualities, yet it's electric and I can really crank it up and get goin' on it. Of course though I would never travel with just one guitar... my other guitars get mad if I leave them at home all alone! :-)
